- The 10th symbol represents the model year. Letters B through Y indicate the various vehicle configuration years from 1981 to 2000. Starting in 2010, the characters started over at A and will continue to do so until 2030.

- The 11th character shows which plant assembled the vehicle, with every automaker having their own set of codes.

- Positions 12 through 17 are a production sequence, assigned on the assembly line by the manufacturer.
