Motor vehicles are the primary mode of transportation for most of us, and often an indispensable part of our lives. Could you picture what would you do if your vehicle suddenly went missing? Well, finding out your car is gone is every driver’s worst fear. According to a recent NHTSA study, over 750,000 drivers fall victim to car theft every year. Even though automotive crimes have decreased in numbers compared to the previous decade, it is still a significant issue affecting hundreds of thousands of Americans.

Though we get used to thinking that car thieves hunt on some luxury models and sporty roadsters, but that’s far from reality. Contrary to the stereotype, instead of high-speed sports cars, we see cars like the Honda Civic, Honda Accord, Ford F150, Toyota Camry, and Dodge RAM head a list of the most stolen cars depending on the state. Meanwhile, the top states for most vehicles stolen are California, Texas, Florida, Washington, Illinois, and Georgia.

This can be explained by the fact that these are the most popular cars in the U.S. which makes it both more difficult for the police to track and identify a stolen vehicle and easier for car thieves to sell the vehicle on the secondary automarket. Besides, high demand for used parts makes such cars lucrative targets for thieves. Parts for popular models are in high demand due to the multitude of owners with the same model. Parting out a stolen car may generate even more money than the value of the car intact.

Furthermore, not all thieves are interested in further resale of stolen vehicles or their parts on the black market. Some of them commit a string of crimes. For these purposes, they usually prefer pickups which are both roomy and have a high load capacity. Moreover, Chevrolet, Ford, Dodge, GMC full-size pickup trucks are pretty well-spread on the streets that helps thieves easily melt into traffic.

If you do not want to be a victim of car theft, always lock all windows and doors and park your car only in well-lit areas. Also, never leave valuables like laptops, desktops, or expensive bags in your car, especially if they can be seen from outside the vehicle. It may serve as a bait for petty pilferers. If you do need to leave something inside your car, it’s better to hide it in a glove compartment or under the seats.

Ideally, you should also equip a vehicle with a warning device in addition to a standard security system. Warning devices and GPS or other tracking systems are your second line of defense against theft and locating your car after being stolen. Normally, theft recovery devices emit a tracking signal. Even though the battery lasts only for a couple of days, that increases your chances to get your vehicle back.

In view of the high level of auto crimes, you may easily run into a stolen car when you’re on the market for a used vehicle. So, we encourage you to check the car for evidence of VIN cloning using a VIN Decoder and making sure you’re aware of the vehicle’s true history with ClearVin prior to going for a deal. Read our article to learn more on how to check if a VIN is authentic and how VIN decoding can prevent you from buying a stolen car.
