ClearVIN draws data directly from the National Motor Vehicle Title Information System (NMVTIS) to help provide you the very best information possible on a vehicle history report. NMVTIS is an extension of the U.S. Department of Justice which was created with the goal to protect consumers from vehicle fraud.

Specifically, NMVTIS seeks to achieve four main goals:

  1. Prevent the introduction or reintroduction of stolen motor vehicles into interstate commerce;
  2. Protect states and consumers (individual and commercial) from fraud;
  3. Reduce the use of stolen vehicles for illicit purposes including funding of criminal enterprises; and
  4. Provide consumers protection from unsafe vehicles.

To do this, NMVTIS works with vehicle titling offices, insurance carriers, junk and salvage yards to provide the most up-to-date information available. This is all in an effort to fulfill the Anti-Car Theft Act of 1992 which was enacted to deter trafficking of stolen vehicles, and protect consumers against fraud.

A free VIN decoder from ClearVIN uses this information, along with other sources and proprietary information from salvage auction yards, to provide our customers the best information possible to ensure that you remain educated and protected when finding the right car for you. We offer you to check VIN number free now with ClearVIN. As an alternative, consider a car license plate lookup to meet your needs. We have something to offer to every motorist.

  1. Hello there! This article couldn’t be written much better! Looking at this post reminds me of my previous roommate! He always kept preaching about this. I most certainly will send this post to him. Fairly certain he’ll have a great read. Thanks for sharing!
